FAMAC

FAMAC is an association comprised of trained professionals, including legal practitioners, psychologists, and social workers, who specialise in family mediation. The organisation aims to provide a structured environment where families can resolve disputes related to divorce and other family matters amicably and collaboratively. Mediators affiliated with FAMAC are committed to helping participants reach mutually beneficial agreements through a voluntary and confidential process.

Mediation services

■ Family mediation: FAMAC specialises in resolving issues related to divorce, child custody, and parenting plans. Their mediators work with families to enhance communication and find mutually acceptable solutions.

■ Divorce mediation: This service helps couples navigate the complexities of divorce without resorting to adversarial court proceedings. Mediators assist in negotiating settlements regarding divorce, asset division, child support, and visitation rights.

■ Child care and contact mediation: FAMAC offers mediation specifically focused on child care and contact arrangements, ensuring that the best interests of the child are prioritised while helping parents reach an agreement.

Parenting coordination services

■ Conflict resolution: FAMAC parenting coordinators (PC) have received specialised training to facilitate discussions to help parents reach agreements on contentious issues without resorting to court interventions.

■ Implementation and crafting unique parenting plans: They assist in developing and executing parenting plans that are in line with settlement agreements and court orders, ensuring compliance and understanding between parties.

■ Decision-making authority: In certain cases and within the scope of a court order, court parenting coordinators have the authority to issue binding directives on specific issues when parents cannot reach an agreement.

Value added by FAMAC’s accredited mediators

Expertise in family dynamics: Their focus on family mediation means that FAMAC professionals are well-trained in understanding the emotional and psychological aspects of family disputes. This expertise enables them to facilitate discussions that are sensitive to the needs of all participants involved, particularly children.

Cost-effective solutions: Mediation is generally less expensive than litigation. By providing a platform for negotiation rather than confrontation, FAMAC mediators helps clients save on legal fees and court costs while reaching amicable agreements.

Confidentiality: Mediation sessions with FAMAC mediators are confidential, allowing participants to discuss their issues openly without fear of public exposure or future legal repercussions. This encourages honest dialogue and can lead to more satisfactory outcomes.

Empowerment of participants: mediators empower individuals by involving them directly in the resolution process. Clients have a say in the outcome, which fosters ownership of the solutions reached and promotes compliance with agreements made.

Focus on long-term relationships: By prioritising communication and collaboration over adversarial approaches, FAMAC mediators and parenting coordinators helps preserve relationships between participants, which is particularly crucial in family-related disputes where ongoing interactions are inevitable (e.g., co-parenting).
